How to Bet on Football: A Beginner's Guide
Football betting looks complicated because bookmakers list hundreds of markets. Four of them cover almost everything a beginner needs. Here they are, with NPR examples.
Nepali football fans mostly follow the European leagues — the Premier League, La Liga and the Champions League — and every bookmaker prices those in depth. The football betting market list runs to hundreds of options per match, which is what makes the whole thing look harder than it is. Four markets carry the vast majority of sensible football betting.
Reading the football betting odds
Decimal odds are the default and the easiest to work with. The number is your total return per unit staked, stake included. A NPR 1,000 bet at 2.50 returns NPR 2,500 — NPR 1,500 of profit plus your NPR 1,000 back.
- 1.50
- Returns NPR 1,500 (profit 500)
- 2.00
- Returns NPR 2,000 (profit 1,000)
- 3.40
- Returns NPR 3,400 (profit 2,400)
- 7.00
- Returns NPR 7,000 (profit 6,000)
Odds also express implied probability: divide 100 by the decimal. A price of 2.50 implies a 40% chance. Add up the implied probabilities of all outcomes in a match and you get more than 100% — that excess is the bookmaker's margin, and it is the reason casual betting loses money over time. Our full explainer on reading betting odds works through the conversions.
The four football betting markets that matter
Match Result (1X2). Home win, draw, or away win. The foundation football betting market, and the one where the draw catches beginners out — football produces far more draws than most new bettors expect.
Double Chance. Two of the three outcomes in one bet: home or draw, away or draw, home or away. Shorter odds, higher strike rate. Useful when you are confident a favourite will not lose but not that they will win.
Over/Under Goals. A line — usually 2.5 — and you bet whether the match total finishes above or below it. The half-goal exists so there is no tie. This is a market about the two teams' styles rather than which is better, which is why it is often the cleaner read.
Both Teams to Score (BTTS). Yes or no, ignoring the result entirely. A match can end 0-3 and a Yes bet loses while a No bet wins. It rewards knowing how teams defend rather than who wins.
Markets worth adding later
Asian Handicap gives one side a goal head start, which turns a lopsided fixture into something near even money. Half-goal lines cannot draw, so they settle cleanly.
Draw No Bet refunds your stake if the match ends level — a safer 1X2 at shorter odds.
Correct Score pays long odds and lands rarely. Treat it as entertainment, not strategy.
Accumulators, honestly
An accumulator combines several selections into one bet, multiplying the football betting odds together. Four selections at 1.80 turn NPR 500 into roughly NPR 5,200 — if every leg wins. One loss and the whole bet is gone.
The part rarely said out loud: the bookmaker's margin compounds on every leg. A four-fold carries roughly four times the built-in disadvantage of a single. Accumulators are fun and they are how big returns happen from small stakes, but they are the worst-value bet on the board, and the acca bonus promotions exist because the maths favours the house so heavily. Keep them small and keep them occasional.
How much to stake
Decide your total betting budget for a month, then bet a fixed small percentage of it — 1% to 2% — on any single bet. On a NPR 10,000 budget that is NPR 100 to NPR 200 a bet.
It sounds too small to matter, and that is the point. Flat staking is what keeps a bad week from becoming an empty account, and it removes the decision that does the real damage: raising your stake to win back a loss. The confidence you feel about a bet is not information, and staking more on it does not make it more likely.
Live betting
In-play prices move with the match — a red card, an early goal, a team pushing for an equaliser. Live betting rewards watching the game rather than reading the table, and it punishes impulse harder than any pre-match market because the next price is always seconds away.
Cash Out lets you settle a bet early at a price that includes a margin against you. It is useful for closing a position you no longer believe in. As a habit it quietly erodes returns.
Beginner mistakes
- Betting your team. Loyalty is not analysis, and you will pay for it every week.
- Chasing losses. Doubling the stake after a loss is the fastest route to an empty balance.
- Too many legs. Long accumulators feel like value and are the opposite.
- Betting every match. There is no obligation to have a position on a game you have not thought about.
- Ignoring the bonus terms. Bonus funds carry wagering requirements that decide whether you can withdraw at all.
The European leagues are priced in NPR with live markets and cash out.
See football marketsThe Football Betting Markets Worth Learning First
Four markets carry almost all the liquidity, and understanding them covers most of what a bettor needs. The match result market, the goal line, the Asian handicap and both teams to score.
The match result market is the three-way price on home, draw and away. It is the most efficient line on the board, which means it is the hardest to beat and the cheapest to use. Every other market is priced from it.
Football betting on the goal line ignores the winner entirely and asks how many goals the match produces. That independence is why it survives a match where your opinion on the result was wrong.
The Asian handicap removes the draw by giving one side a start, which turns a mismatch back into a decision. The handicap article covers the quarter lines in full.
Team News Moves a Price More Than Form
Football betting markets react to a confirmed eleven far more than to a run of results. A first-choice goalkeeper ruled out moves a goal line further than a missing striker does, because a squad's second keeper is usually a bigger drop in quality than its second forward.
Line-ups are published about an hour before kick-off. Anything staked before that includes a guess about selection alongside a guess about football, and the two are separate skills.
A match result priced on the strength of last week is priced on a different team, particularly in competitions where rotation is heavy.
Three Habits That Cost Money
Backing famous teams at short prices. Public money concentrates there, and football betting markets are adjusted to account for it, which makes the well-known side the worse value more often than not.
Combining several selections into one bet. The margin compounds with every leg, and five selections carry roughly twenty percent of embedded cost before any opinion is tested.
Ignoring the settlement rules. A postponed fixture voids or stands depending on the operator, and a match result settled after ninety minutes is a different market from one settled after extra time.
Frequently asked questions
What does 1X2 mean in football betting?
1 is the home win, X is the draw, 2 is the away win. It is the standard match result market and the starting point for most football bets.
What is the easiest football bet for a beginner?
Match Result or Double Chance. Both are simple to understand, and Double Chance covers two of the three outcomes at shorter odds.
How do I calculate my return in NPR?
Multiply your stake by the decimal odds. A NPR 1,000 stake at 2.50 returns NPR 2,500 in total, which is NPR 1,500 profit plus your stake back.
Are accumulators worth it?
They offer big returns from small stakes but the bookmaker's margin compounds on every leg, making them the worst-value bets on the board. Keep them small and occasional.
What does Over 2.5 goals mean?
You are betting that the match finishes with three or more goals in total. The half-goal exists so the bet cannot end in a tie.
How much should I bet per match?
One to two percent of your total betting budget per bet. Flat staking is what stops a bad run from clearing your balance.
