IPL Betting Guide: Markets, Odds and Tips
The IPL is the most heavily bet cricket tournament in the world, and it IPL odds deeper than any other T20 competition. Here is what each market settles on and what actually moves the numbers.
Cricket is the sport Nepal follows most closely, and for two months a year the IPL is the centre of it. It also carries the deepest betting markets in the sport — dozens per match, most of them settled inside four hours. Depth is an opportunity and a trap: more markets means more ways to bet badly.

Why the IPL IPL odds so deep
Volume. More money goes through IPL markets than any other T20 tournament, so bookmakers price more of them and keep margins tighter than they do on smaller leagues. Tighter margins mean better value on the main markets — and it also means the obvious edges are gone. If a line looks generous in the IPL, the more likely explanation is information you do not have.
The core markets
Match winner. Two outcomes, no draw. A Super Over settles a tie in the IPL, though you should check how your bookmaker treats a tie in the rules tab, because some void the IPL betting market instead of settling on the Super Over.
Total runs (over/under). A line on the innings or match total. This is a pitch and venue market more than a team market — a flat surface and a short boundary push the line up, and dew in the second innings pushes scoring up again.
Total sixes. Same logic, more volatile. Two overs from one batter can settle it, which makes it entertaining and hard to read.
Asian handicap on runs. Gives one side a head start, turning a mismatch into something near even money. Half-run lines cannot tie, so they settle cleanly.
Player markets and their traps
Top batter is the most popular player market and the one where people lose money on the rules rather than the cricket.
- A player who does not bat is normally void, and your stake comes back. But a number-seven who is never expected to bat is not a value bet, it is a bet on your stake being returned.
- Dead heat rules apply when two players finish level. Your return is divided, so a "win" can pay half of what you calculated.
- Openers are short for the plainest reason in cricket: they are guaranteed to face the most deliveries. You are paying for ball-count, not for form.
Top wicket-taker follows the same shape, with the extra wrinkle that a bowler's overs depend on how the innings goes. A strike bowler in a match that ends early has fewer chances to win you the bet.
The toss and the venue
In T20 the toss moves IPL odds within seconds, because chasing is generally preferred — the chasing side knows the target, and under lights the ball can come on better in the second innings. When a captain wins the toss and bowls, expect their price to shorten immediately.
Venue matters more than reputation. Check what recent matches at that ground actually totalled rather than the tournament average, and check whether dew has been a factor in evening games there. Those two data points beat most pre-match analysis.
In-play, where T20 is won
A T20 innings reprices every ball, and cricket swings harder than football because a single over can change the game. Two wickets in an over move a match-winner price further than any team news does.
That volatility is why in-play punishes impulse. Decide before the match what you are watching for — a specific over, a wicket, a required rate crossing a threshold — and bet that, rather than reacting to whatever just happened. Cash Out lets you settle early at a price that carries a margin against you; useful for closing a position, expensive as a reflex.
Rules that decide your bet
- Rain and DLS. Reduced-overs matches settle differently across markets. Total-runs bets on a shortened match are usually void; match-winner usually stands on the DLS result.
- Abandoned matches. Most markets void, stakes returned.
- Minimum overs. Many markets need a set number of overs bowled to stand.
- Super Over. Counts for match winner, usually not for player or total markets.
Read the rules tab once, at the start of the tournament. It takes five minutes and saves an argument with support later.
Staking across a long tournament
The IPL runs for two months and roughly seventy matches. That length is the real risk: it is easy to bet every day without noticing what the total has become.
Set a tournament budget at the start, divide it by the number of matches you actually intend to bet, and hold that as your unit. Skipping matches is a legitimate strategy — most bettors lose because they have a position on every game rather than because their reads are bad. Our guide on reading odds covers how to tell whether a price is worth taking at all.
IPL and international cricket are priced in NPR with in-play markets and cash out.
See cricket marketsWhich Markets Carry the Money
IPL betting concentrates in four places: match result, match total, top batsman by team and top bowler by team. Those four carry the liquidity, the tightest margins and the highest limits, and everything else on the board is thinner.
IPL odds on the match result are among the most efficiently priced cricket markets anywhere, because the volume is enormous and the data is deep. That efficiency makes them a poor place to look for an edge and a good place to understand what the IPL betting market thinks.
Totals are where venue knowledge pays. Any IPL betting guide that quotes a league average rather than a ground average is describing a number with no use, because the difference between venues exceeds the difference between teams.
Auction, Squads and Season-Long Markets
Squads are rebuilt through an auction rather than a draft, which produces far less continuity than other franchise leagues. Last season's form transfers poorly, and IPL betting on outrights taken before the auction is priced on rosters that no longer exist.
Overseas availability is the second variable. Players leaving mid-season for international duty end season-long positions without any refund, and IPL odds on top run scorer are particularly exposed to it.
Playoff qualification markets are usually better value than the outright, because four of ten qualify and the market prices the table more accurately than it prices the ladder that follows.
Watching From Nepal
Start times suit this time zone well. Evening fixtures in India land in the Nepali evening, which makes live markets practical rather than an overnight proposition, and that is a genuine advantage over European football.
Dew is the condition that matters most in those evening matches. A wet ball does not grip, chasing gets easier, and the toss decision reflects that before the coin lands. Any IPL betting guide written from outside the region tends to underweight it.
The IPL page covers the competition in full, and the totals article covers the venue effect that drives IPL odds on runs lines.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best market for IPL beginners?
Match winner. Two outcomes, no draw, and it is the IPL betting market where the bookmaker's margin is tightest because it takes the most money.
Does the toss matter in IPL betting?
Yes. Chasing is generally preferred in T20, so a captain winning the toss and choosing to bowl usually shortens their side's price within seconds.
What happens to my bet if rain shortens the match?
It depends on the IPL betting market. Total-runs bets on a shortened match are usually void, while match winner normally settles on the DLS result. An abandoned match voids most markets.
What are dead heat rules in top batter markets?
If two players finish level on the highest score, the return is divided between them. A winning bet can pay roughly half what you expected.
Why are opening batters always short odds?
They are guaranteed to face the most deliveries, which gives them the best chance of the highest score. You are paying for ball-count as much as for form.
